Title: A Historical Record of the Pioneers in Mandarin Popularization in Hong Kong — A Review of A Detailed Account of Seventy Years of Civil Society-Led Mandarin Popularization in Hong Kong

Abstract: A Detailed Account of Seventy Years of Civil Society-Led Mandarin Popularization in Hong Kong systematically reviews the seventy-year journey of civil society-led Putonghua promotion in Hong Kong from the post-World War II period until 2017. It details the efforts of pioneers such as Liu Qiusheng, Zhang Jiacheng, and Xu Yaoci, who actively promoted the popularization of Mandarin in Hong Kong by establishing various non-governmental organizations (e.g., the Hong Kong Putonghua Study Society, the Hong Kong Mandarin Teachers Association, and the Hong Kong Putonghua Education Centre), compiling textbooks, and organizing courses and activities. The book not only documents key events and figures in the Mandarin Popularization in Hong Kong but also reflects the shift in motivation from interest-driven to utilitarian purposes. Furthermore, it inspires further efforts to promote Mandarin in Hong Kong by leveraging historical insights, language life surveys, and new technological means, thereby facilitating Hong Kong's integration into the national development framework.
