Title: Review of Comparative Rhetoric: Core Ideas and Research Approaches
Abstract:Comparative rhetoric is an emerging school within international rhetorical studies, devoted to examining the content and modes of human communication while moving beyond cultural binarism and a Western-centric perspective. Liu Donghong’s monograph Comparative Rhetoric: Core Ideas and Research Approaches systematically traces the discipline’s intellectual lineage as it developed out of traditional contrastive rhetoric and intercultural rhetoric. It elucidates the discipline’s symbiotic nature as “both an object of study and a method of study,” together with its core methodology of “recontextualization/tertium quid,” and distills three research approaches, illustrated through a series of empirical studies on hotel discourse, Chinese argumentative texts, the argumentative writing of Chinese and Burmese learners of English, and Chinese and English news commentaries. The book clarifies the disciplinary identity of comparative rhetoric, advances its methodology from concept to practice, and demonstrates theoretical innovation in its refinements of the Toulmin model and the pragma-dialectical model, thereby laying an important foundation for the development of comparative rhetoric in Chinese academia.
