Title: An Ecological Perspective on Huayu in Southeast Asia through the Lens of Linguistic Landscape

——A Review of Studies on the Linguistic Landscape of Chinese Communities in Southeast Asia

Abstract: Professor Zhu Xiaohong’s Studies on the Linguistic Landscape of Chinese Communities in Southeast Asia takes the linguistic landscape as an entry point to systematically investigate language use within Chinese communities across five Southeast Asian countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. This work transcends the limitations of traditional overseas Huayu studies, which have tended to emphasize ontological description, by effectively integrating micro-level linguistic variation with macro-level language ecology, thereby achieving innovations in research perspective, methodology, and theoretical development. Throughout the book, a profound concern for the historical circumstances of Chinese societies in Southeast Asia is evident, alongside a compassionate portrayal of the life situations of countless ordinary Chinese individuals behind the shop signs. In summary, this book not only offers a new paradigm for the study of Huayu overseas, but also makes a significant contribution to the localized development of linguistic landscape research.
