Title: A Study on the Interaction between Multimodal Linguistic Landscape and Spacial Identities in the Greater Bay Area from the Perspective of Urban Renewal: A Case Study of Yongqing Fang, Guangzhou

Abstract: Taking Yongqing Fang in Guangzhou, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) as the research scope, this study investigates the interactive relationship between multimodal linguistic landscapes and spatial identities from the perspective of urban renewal. By comprehensively applying theories of sociolinguistics and urban sociology, as well as combining quantitative and qualitative research methods, it conducts multidimensional analysis on 1,421 pieces of multimodal linguistic landscape data collected through field surveys from 2020 to 2024 and 1,328 questionnaires. The results show that the multimodal linguistic landscapes in Yongqing Fang include 9 combination types, with text-image landscapes as the main form. These landscapes cover 8 industrial categories such as catering and cultural education, and undertake 6 major functions including commercial identification and cultural promotion. Their core functions are information linkage and highlighting, scene construction and context-driven, as well as translanguaging practice and expression. Respondents hold a positive attitude towards multimodal landscapes, and the overall average score of spatial identities is high. There is a significant positive correlation between the attitude towards multimodal linguistic landscapes and spatial identities, with the strongest correlation observed in the dimension of cultural identity. Variables such as respondents' gender, education level, and age have a moderating effect on the interaction between multimodal landscapes and spatial identities. On the basis of empirical research, we put forward suggestions on the governance of linguistic landscape in urban renewal in the GBA.
